The Babalooneys - Goin' For It Vinyl LP (Indie Exclusive Red Vinyl)
I’m not sure there are rideable waves on the St. Lawrence River, but this Quebec City 5-piece somehow found the inspiration to create the most traditional sounding surf rock n’ roll you’ll ever hear. Surely they have a plentiful supply of albums from The Astronauts, The Lively Ones, The Pyramids, Satan’s Pilgrims and The Penetrators in their collection. The album sounds like each member has thoroughly researched guitars n’ gear, melodies, instruments and production techniques, as the sound is absolutely perfect from start to finish. However, great attention has been devoted towards creating memorable melodies - while most surf fans will definitely feel moments of familiarity, there are no out-n-out pastiches of previous surf hits. You’ll hear chugging, drippy rhythm guitar, twangly lead guitar and occasional sax, propelled forward by tight, intricate interplay between the bassist and drummer. You hit play, and BAM, you are washed over in waves of amazing surf rock n’ roll.
