V/A - Wave Walk'n: A Tribute to The Surf Raiders CD (Green Cookie) 

The Surf Raiders were an early 80’s surf band that were one of the key components for the revival of surf music after a 15 year hiatus. This 18 song CD pays tribute to them, with bands throughout the world covering the classic songs of the Surf Raiders. Nearly all of the bands on this disc will be familiar to most - The El Caminos, Frankie & The Poolboys, Messer Chups, Insect Surfers, The Supertones, Surfer Joe, The Breakers and many more. What I enjoyed were the bands that I had never heard of before - some of the best songs came from The Sunnyside 5, The Wrecked Crew and Voodoo Surf Tribe. I also appreciated the fact that many of the bands stayed true to the traditional, early 60’s SoCal surf sound, just as the Surf Raiders did with their recordings. It would have been easy for these bands to rearrange or modernize the tunes to try to “make them their own”. Wave Walk’n really works as a tribute, showing off the tremendous body of work the Surf Raiders delivered during their time. However, just as importantly, it works simply as a great collection of surf tunes.
