The Vicissitones - Melody, Rhythm & Reverb CD (Self-Released)
The Vicissitones are a relatively new surf/instro rock combo based in Ann Arbor, Michigan that sport a full lineup of two guitars, bass, drums and sax. While there were many early 60’s bands during the first wave of surf that had a similar lineup, The Vicissitones have a more modern sound, although there are a few songs that do harken back to the classic So Cal sound as well (in particular “Secret Beaches”, “Snake Eyes” and “Antman Stomp”). The rest of the disc shows off a variety of influences, most notably sci-fi surf. The cover art is interesting, funny, and decidedly retro. Overall it’s an excellent introduction to the band, and amazingly, it only took them two days to record the entire thing!
