The Space Cossacks - Live Supernova CD (MuSick) 

The Space Cossacks took what The Shadows and The Atlantics started in the 60’s and gave it a powerful jolt of energy that wowed surf music fans throughout the 90’s. After releasing a few classic records and playing shows on both coasts of the country they went their separate ways, with lead guitarist Ivan Pongracic forming the equally vital combo The Madeira. While the Space Cassacks have thankfully been able to reunite periodically to the delight of longtime fans as well as those that missed them the first time around, there are many out there that missed out. That's where this disc comes in - it captures the band at their absolute peak, in 1996 in Long Beach, CA, performing 21 songs in a blistering set. Jay Hector and Richard Blair brought in their recording gear and captured a full, dynamic sound that is rarely heard on live recordings. With audience sound minimized, this really sounds like a studio recording, but the band doesn't merely copy the original recordings verbatim - there's a different vibe, or atmosphere on display here that's not necessarily better than the studio recordings, just different. In addition to lots of great songs performed from their two full length albums, there are also well-chosen covers that fit in with the theme and aesthetic of the band - such as “War Of The Satellites”, “The Cossack”, “Third Star To The Left”, “Cossack Rocket Patrol”, “The Savage” and “Bombora”. This disc also features artwork from Stephen Blickenstaff. All in all an absolutely essential disc to add to you collection, and I'd recommend acting fast since it's a limited edition release.
