3-D - 3-D 7” EP (MuSick)

3-D is the studio project of guitarist and songwriter Michael Purkhiser, who has had a long and storied career in rock n’ roll since the 60’s. He honed his guitar skills throughout the decade, playing with a variety of local bands, before playing with The Action in the late 1970’s. After a few singles he later joined The Walking Clampetts playing rockabilly and traditional 50’s style rock and roll. In the late 90’s he formed 3-D, and recorded 30 songs that never saw the light of day. However, there were four instrumental tunes, inspired by the background music used in 1960s British TV shows. Those songs are now seeing the light of day thanks to MuSick Recordings. The first thing that will grab you is the exquisite, retro-cool cover art and the blood red vinyl that the tunes were pressed on. The cover art on both sides was done by none other than Lux Interior (Erick Lee Purkhiser), the legendary late singer of The Cramps. That’s right - they’re brothers! While Michael Purkhiser never achieved the fame his brother did, there’s no denying his talent - and these four songs are pretty incredible and varied. It kicks off with “Razor Ridge”, which has a twangy lead guitar, horns, organ and a swingin’ go-go beat. Next up is a trip to space with “Moonshot ‘69” which is my favorite - it’s got a great lead melody and a driving beat, and I love the strummed acoustic guitars as well. The acoustic guitar sound isn’t heard often enough in surf and instrumental rock - some may say it doesn’t fit, but it’s been used to great effect by bands like The Penetrators (this song actually sounds like it could have been a Penetrators outtake). Flipping it over you’ve got “Requiem For A Surfer”, which is a slow, smouldering ballad with a great lead guitar melody that shares the spotlight with piano and synth strings. The final cut revs things up to finish off the EP - it’s a bluesy, twangy tune that is reminiscent of The Tiki Tones or Fifty Foot Combo. Overall a great platter, and one you’ll want to snap up fast as only 500 were made and there’s no doubt that if the surf/instro fans don’t act fast, all of the Lux Interior/Cramps fans will get ‘em first.
