It wasn’t the original plan – who would have thought the world needed 3 volumes of Christmas and holiday music done surf style? Well, they have been among our most popular releases, so who are we to say no? This volume has songs from all over the world, including The Surfites (Sweden), The Mobsmen (Norway), Burt Rocket (Iceland/Norway), The Razorblades (Germany), The Urban Surf Kings (Canada), and of course, the United States. While mostly surf/instro, there are a few songs that veer into frat rock, swing and exotica, to mix things up a bit. After all, you can’t just drink eggnog and eat fruitcake during the holidays – a little spiced wine and cranberry sauce is good for a little variety. The Balboas have put together a nice video for their song, “This Is Santa Claus (Bad Boy Mix)”

Sundazed Reissuing Ventures Christmas Album On LP

Sundazed is reissuing the classic The Ventures’ Christmas Album on 180 gram vinyl. Regarded as one of the classic surf/instrumental rock n’ roll holiday albums, I’m sure most of you already have the songs in your collection. You may even have the original LP. I only have it on CD, so I’ll be scooping this up – it’ll be perfect going between this album and the Phil Spector Christmas album I picked up from Sundazed last year.

I’ve posted the lists of a couple surf musicians, but thought I’d contribute my own. This list is a mix of everything that I’ve been diggin’ this holiday season. There’s a little bit of everything, but my main criteria is simply listing the songs that have buzzed around my head the most. The song here include some surf, some classic and some that are just downright cheesy. In no particular order, here goes:

Well I must say when it comes to Christmas songs, I err on the vintage/strange side (except for Barbara Streisand’s “Jingle Bells”……aaaarrrggggg……..I’d like to konk her on the head with a yule-log when I hear that!)

I would say any of the old crooner classics i can take year after year….not crazy on any of the recreations or new twists….

Here are a few off the top of my head…

5) Anything from those cool Rankin & Bass Christmas shows from the 60′s and 70′s. over the top puppets singing with vibrato and reverb drenched vocals is all right by me!
4) The Lawrence Welk Christmas Show are cool…..those chicks with that hair….why don’t women look like that anymore? pass the cheese please!
3) I have a 45 of “Marshmallow World” by Los Straitjackets that I really like…with Jimmy on drums.
2) “Sleigh Ride” by The Ventures……never get sick of that.
1) The Vince Guaraldi “Charlie Brown Christmas” record…that record is great start to finish, but i would say my favorite is the haunting vocal version of “Christmas Time Is Here”.

He is an avid collector of Christmas and holiday music, and each year he puts together an unbeatable compilation of obscure holiday tunes that it’d probably take you or I years to put together (even in the internet age). His 2009 compilation is now available online, and as an added bonus, you can hear him on the current Sound Opinions podcast.

I’ve been sucked into this great blog, Classic Television Showbiz, that collects lots of great videos from YouTube and other streaming video sites. If you grew up in the 50′s – 80′s, this site is packed with all the shows you remember from your childhood. This month they’ve been featuring tons of holiday specials, Christmas episodes of various TV shows, and musical performances. Faves so far include the Thunderbirds Christmas episode, Judy Garland’s trippy appearance on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, the Christmas episode from C.H.i.P.s, and the Garry Moore show from the 50′s.
