The Venturas - Here They Are! CD (Drum Boy)

This is an obscure one - search the web for the Venturas or their label, Drum Boy Records, and you're not going to find much. However, the original artwork from their 1963 album has been released on CD with the original LP artwork, so there is a brief history of the short-lived band included. It's a pretty simple story - 5 teens in Chicago get together, decide to play instrumental rock n' roll, play a few local shows, recorded an album, and broke up soon after to face adulthood and it's obligations. Overall it's a nicely done set of surf/instro classics.

    The Vision - Now We Have A Colour Television CD (Gas)

    The Finnish band, The Vision, comes from city of Pori, playing surf-music with a rock-attitude. They began back in 2009 with Tomi "Tommy Orbitron" 
Liljankoski - guitar (also in band Waikiki Kuks), Topi "Eric Electron" Lofman - bass (also in Jim Beat & Jussi Haanpaa) and Kari "Gary H.A. 
Fish" Hakala - drums. With their second album "Now We Have A Colour Television" The Vision serves a full table of their own material. Songs composed by Liljankoski have been arranged with the band and the songs have the potential to become classics in their own genre. Catchy melodies and tight rhythm keeps the listener focused throughout the album.

    The Volcanics - Girls Girls Girls CD (Orbitone)

    The Volcanics are one of the best bands in California today. They deliver surf and rock n' roll inspired by bands like The Trashmen, The Fender Four, The Astronauts, Adrian & The Sunsets, Mike & The Ravens, and Jim Messina & The Jesters. They aren't purely an instrumental band, but they deliver the vocal tunes very well and all of the songs work together to create a very solid full-length CD. Their vocalist is great - he's got a powerful set of pipes and really shows off his talent on the title track.

    The Wanglers are a great traditional instrumental rock band that cross the melodies and tone of The Shadows with the energy of The Ventures. Featuring Pekka Laine of The Hypnomen, this group has a completely different sound that allows him to do something different. Of the fourteen sings here about half are originals and half are covers (including “Ginza Lights”, “Theme From Persuaders” and a couple of traditional European tunes). All in all an outstanding release.

    A few years ago, a group of guitar geeks in the L.A. area got together to profess their love of the Ventures and the inspirational guitar playing of Nokie Edwards. They didn't realize then that they'd get the chance to work with Nokie many times over the years as his backup band. They've put an album together, with Nokie's participation, that they feel sounds like a great unreleased Ventures album from the mid-1960's. All the right guitars, amps, drums, and microphones were used to give it "that sound."

    This is the debut ten track CD by the Wadadli Riders, a combo led by Surfer Joe (aka Lorenzo Valdambrini), operator and founder of the excellent Surfer Joe Music website and annual surf music festival in Italy. He doesn't fail to deliver here - all ten originals are excellent, featuring great songwriting, performances and production throughout.
