Rat Holic - Wipe Out With Rat Holic CD

Rat Holic - Wipe Out With Rat Holic CD

This five-piece combo from Japan delivers a fun, energetic set of surf and frat rock style tunes on this 16 track CD. Featuring Kahori on organ, Marie on drums, Run Run on bass, Etsuko on saxophone and Ajiro on guitar, this band might have an odd name, but they play rock n' roll on the same level as fellow countrymen Jackie & The Cedrics, Goggle-A, The Le Caminos and The Mighty Moguls.

Shig & Buzz â Live Adventures Of⦠CD (Addison Avenue)

Shig & Buzz – Live Adventures Of… CD (Addison Avenue)

This is a live recording by the Shig & Buzz band that includes Shig Komiyama on drums, Yoon-ki Chai on violin/keyboards, Roger Rocha on guitar and Johnny Hamiltone on bass. For a live disc, the sound is very good and band is great – I enjoyed this just as much as their studio recordings. It's mostly originals, and ends with a unique cover of "Dark Eyes".

With "Countrypolitan Favorites", SCOTS are giving us a glimpse into their private record collections by compiling 15 one of a kind covers, recorded at singer Rick Miller's Kudzu Ranchrecording studio. From Mary Huff's sultry take on "Funnel of Love" (made famous by Wanda Jackson), to Miller's version of the Don Gibson classic, "Oh Lonesome Me," and their swingers-on-the-rocks duet, "Let's Invite Them Over" (an Onie Wheeler original), SCOTS have recorded what might be the definitive countrypolitan soundtrack to a life lived on the skids.

Southern Culture On The Skids - Mojo Box CD (YepRoc)

"Mojo Box" combines SCOTS trademark elements of rockabilly, surf, country, blues and more for as irreverent and enlightening a record as the band has ever assembled. Produced by main SCOTSman Rick Miller and longtime studio collaborator Mark Williams, "Mojo Box" was the first Southern Culture album recorded and mixed entirely in Miller's rural North Carolina studio: Kudzu Ranch Recorders (Fleshtones, Forty-Fives). The studio boasts an impressive collection of Miller's vintage guitars and amps, many of which are used here to create the down-home, rockin' feel to songs like "Doublewide," "69 El Camino," "Where Is The Moon" and more. Comes with three bonus stickers.

Space Party - Invasion Of The Surfer-Men! CD (Self-Released)

Space Party - Invasion Of The Surfer-Men! CD (Self-Released)

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill surf music – it kicks you in the face without any warning with the band’s “theme song”, “Space Party”, packed with crunchy, fuzzy guitars. Once they have your attention, they change things up a bit here and there, but for the most part this is a disc that hits you like a wall of bricks – it’s loud, powerful and, did I mention it before, it’s LOUD! Even listening to this at the lowest volume setting on your desktop computer, it’s loud – it could almost be called surf/metal.

Speedball Jr. - For The Broad Minded CD (Green Cookie)

Speedball Jr. - For The Broad Minded CD (Green Cookie)

This hard rockin' instrumental combo from Belguim delivers a sound similar to the Apemen, with loud guitars and a powerful low-end that throws you into the nearest wall and pounds you again and again until you're unconscious. Like the Apemen, they use organ here and there, but Speedball Jr. uses more of a 60's go-go sound with it, which in a way contrasts more with the guitar sounds. Most of the tunes here are originals, but they have picked some fine covers, modern ones even, like "Laguna Beach" by The Treble Spankers and "What A Way To Run A Railroad" by Huevos Rancheros. This ain't music for layin' by the pool - this is the kinda of music you listen to while drinkin PBR and throwin' it your buddies.
