It’s great to see that the surf scene is growing in Russia, although it’s not too surprising given the explosion of surf music coming out of Europe these days. Messer Chups are one of the leading Russian surf bands, with several CD’s released so far. This disc combines traditional surf drum beats and reverbed guitar tones with bold experimentation and unique songwriting. Given the title, it’s not surprising that a certain darkness permeates through the recordings, making this somewhat appropriate listening for Halloween or the dark fall months of the year.
