Frankie & The Poolboys - S/T CD

Led by Pollo Del Mar guitarist Ferenc Dobrony, Frankie & The Pool Boys are a surf "supergroup" featuring Dusty Watson (Dick Dale, Agent Orange, Slacktone, etc.) on drums and PDM's Jeff Turner on bass, along with cameos from Shigeo Naka (Japan's The Surf Coasters), Dave Wronski (Slacktone), Ivan Pongracic (The Madeira, The Space Cossacks), Mel Waldorf (Meshugga Beach Party, Los Mel-tones) and 2008 Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bob Spaulding (The Ventures). The sound is strictly old world warm, no distortion boxes or digital reverbs were used. The styles range from reverb drippin' trad ("Teke, Teke, Teke", "Johnny Fool") to Spaghetti Western ("A Man Called Dirt", "Finito Bandito").     This mostly-original fourteen-track release is filled with great reverb drenched tunes, which at times sound a bit like Laika & The Cosmonauts. This is especially the case with the title track that kicks off this disc and the second cut, a Farfisa driven stroll called "Stargate". Man, what a one-two punch! They squeeze in a few obscure covers, including "Malibu Run", "Cross Ties" and "Hot Line".

    Jon & The Nightriders were the bridge between vintage 60’s surf and modern 90’s surf. I remember talking to a bunch of bands in the 90’s who listed this LP as one of their biggest influences. Originally recorded in 1986, it is packed with classics like “Stampede”, “Storm Dancer”, “Shaften” and “Beneath The Reef”. You can hear their influence in bands like The Penetrators, The Space Cossacks and The Untamed Youth. The fourteen songs from the original LP are here, along with 5 live recordings from the 90’s.
