You'll love everything about this exotic music combo – the peppy, uptempo music, as well as the great packaging you’ll find with all of their products. If the incredible, vintage style graphics weren’t enough, you even get a friggin’ cocktail umbrella inside the spine of the CD case! But let’s get back to the music, shall we? The Tikiyaki Orchestra includes 7 musicians, plus occasional guests, all of which bring their influences and interests to the band. You can tell that they don’t simply get together to play Martin Denny style music. While that’s there, you’ll also hear 60’s go-go, 50’s country & western, surf rock, and traditional Hawaiian melodies, as well as the influence of artists and composers like Les Baxter, Combustible Edison, Henry Mancini and Duane Eddy. There are some mellower, laid back songs, but even these sound upbeat. You can sense that the musicians had smiles on their faces while recording this disc. Take Fifty Foot Combo and Laika & The Cosmonauts, then add horns, percussion and even flutes, and you’ll get some idea of the sound the songs here. There are a few vocals, including “Devil With A Blue Dress”, but surprisingly, it fits right in with the other songs (which are mostly instrumentals). I wouldn’t classify them as a surf band, although some of the guitar riffs definitely sound surf influenced. You can’t call ‘em any of these either – spy, lounge, soul, go-go, garage rock, R&B, rockabilly, exotica or spaghetti western, because they encompass all of these genres.

They Finish combo bills themselves not as a surf band, but a film-noir instrumental band. While at times their songs aren’t too far removed from having that traditional, early 60’s surf sound, overall they go with a more modern sound, with strong melodies throughout. These melodies actually do sound reminiscent of the classic film tunes of the 50’s and 60’s (with a strong focus on the Bond themes). Most of the songs are originals, but they also include John Barry’s “Vendetta” and Henry Mancini’s “Arabesque”. The Spytones don’t just have a basic 4 piece, guitar/guitar/bass/drums lineup either – they all play additional instruments such as Theremin, Farfisa organ, mandolin, and baritone guitar, and for additional instrumentation they’ve brought in at least 7 of their friends to help out. Overall a great, cinematic band that have delivered a stunning, 15 song CD.

The liner notes for this disc are in French, but from what I can tell, The Blazers were a rock n’ roll band that released a bunch of 7” records on the Fontana label in the late 1950’s. This disc collects 20 of those recordings, and is sure to appeal to fans of the instrumental rock n’ roll sound of that time. There are a few vocals, but the rest is pure, rockin’ sax and guitar, on tunes like “Big Guitar”, “Raunchy”, “Rumble”, “Tequila”, “Witch Docktor”, and more. Overall a great collection, and if you can read French, there are four pages of information about the band inside the booklet.

The Aftons love the twangy, echo-filled sound of The Shadows, The Tornados, or pretty much any of the Joe Meek recorded instrumental groups. They stick to that pure sound, which works wonderfully through the 16 songs on this disc. They haven't bothered to do their own tunes here, but with songs like "Hymn For Teenagers, "Ridin' The Wind", "Kon-Tiki", "Find Me A Golden Street", "Twango" and "Theme From 'The Boys'", it's hard to complain!

Recorded between 1980 - 1982, this UK based combo played a cool blend of 50's rock n' roll (vocal and instrumental) and early 60's beat, mixing in a little bit of rockabilly as well. They used vintage gear, vintage recording techniques and wore vintage suits on stage as well. The 70's were a quiet time for this kind of music in the UK, but The Fantoms were one of the bands that helped bring it back. The disc contains 18 songs, including 7 instrumentals. The Barbwires have a unique approach to instrumental rock n’ roll. Having five members (at the time of this release), plus additional studio contributors, helps them create a sound that is filled with a variety of influences. Their songwriting and playing are outstanding throughout, and they are one of the few bands that plays surf style music with pedal steel, something I would encourage other bands to try if possible because it sounds very good. Other instruments they use include sax, theremin, whip, zip-fly (whatever that is!), acoustic guitar, organ, piano, trombone, trumpet, dobro, double-bass and choir. However, the original artwork from their 1963 album has been released on CD with the original LP artwork, so there is a brief history of the short-lived band included. I got copies of this CD from my pal Art of the King Kongs in Russia. It’s a hard-to-find collection of songs by the mid 60’s Russian instrumental rock n’ roll combo Electron. Packed with great melodies and delivered with exceptional instrumental performances throughout, this was one of my favorite discs received for review in Continental Magazine #17. What’s amazing is how perfect the production is – this isn’t taken off scratchy old Russian vinyl, it’s pristine sounding, like it was just recorded yesterday, I’d definitely rank this up there with any of the albums recorded by the Spotnicks or Shadows from the same time. It’s perhaps a little mellower, and even has what I’d call jazz with some of the songs, but for Euro guitar aficionados this is a great addition to your collection. The Thunderchiefs delivered what could very well have been one of the best surf records of 2007. It's no surprise, considering the talent they have on hand, with members that have played with Death Valley, The Sir-Finks, High Noon and Big Sandy. Their sound is about as traditional as you can get, with vintage equipment and buckets of reverb being used throughout to make this sound like a long lost 1st wave surf record. It's pretty much all original instrumental surf from start to finish, with only a few sweet vocal cuts, but they end it with a great vocal version of "One Potato, Two Potato" which sounds almost exactly like the Crossfires' version. It's all packaged in some great artwork designed by band member Mike Guerrero and laid out by Johnny Bartlett, making this a must-have release for any surf or rock n' roll fan.

Earl And The Losers were formed outta the blue and in-depth into the instrumental dementia in 2005 Bologna, Italy! During that time played only original instrumentalsurf tunes, plus a coupla Link Wray covers! After the summer alcoholidays the line up has changed and they started to introduce in their repertoire a buncha songs written in the last seven years by Maurizio, while style of the instrumental stuff turned into a more Italian Spaghetti Western style! At that time it became naturally to split the 2 projects leaving Earl And The Losers with their surf-spaghetti western repertoire and the newly born DeSoto with the new 'songs'! The influence of the 'songs' coming from the 60's (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lee Hazlewood, etc.) but, above all, from the new scene of the American Alternative country (Giant Sand, Howe Gelb, Calexico, Uncle Tupelo). They love also traditional country stuff (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams), Blues (John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters etc.) and garage punk as well (The Sonics) until the seventies punkrock scene! A must is Sergio Leone and his Spaghetti Western movies, Ennio Morricone's soundtracks, Italian B-Movies from the 60's and 70's (the ones Quentin Tarantino loves), they dig also David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Gus Van Sant and instrumental music for films (surf, western, rumba, calipso, Mexican stuff) played in a punky version!!! The current line up is: Maurizio 'Earl' Guidoni: guitar & vocals, Paolo Ballone: guitar & organ, Enrico Soverini: drums & Michele Rizzoli: drums. So, what we have here? The opening track 'John Wayne's Got Blues' is a high-energy instro with swirling organ that easily will blow your mind and 'Blue Canyon' the perfect soundtrack for our unpracticable treks!!! 'Tucson' without a doubt can be characterized kinda like an ode to the Arizona desert and more… And what about midnight escapades in fuckin' outopia? What else can be said about the Fuzztones? As fans worldwide know, the band has achieved legendary status as cult faves during their 3-decade career. Their fiery brand of Garage-Psych-Punk pre-dated the entire "Garage Revival" of the 1980s and has influenced hundreds of groups, some quite famous. No doubt Fuzztones' fans expected to ogle sexy strippers onstage when they attended 2007’s "Horny As Hell" tour, advertising "Very Special Horny Guests!" What they got instead was the mighty Fuzztones with a killer HORN SECTION! To top it off, the line-up featured the return of veteran Fuzz-monster "Mad" Mike, beating the crap out of the drums, just like he did from 1986 to 1992, and together with bassist Screamin' Bo Pille's steady throb, creating the rhythm section from Hell! Their huge new sound went over so well that Rudi decided to take the band into a recording studio at the end of the tour, and record the set. To emphasize the new arrangements, Lana Loveland switched to wailing Hammond C3 organ, while Rudi Protrudi and Lenny Silver trade stinging leads and driving rhythms throughout! And finally, as if that's not enough, a four-piece female backing group was utilized to provide the sassy backing vocals. The band recorded 17 songs, including future favorites "Garden of My Mind" and the Pretty Things' "Alexander", as well as brand new versions of Fuzztones classics (wait 'til you hear "Ward 81" and "She's Wicked" done "Big Band" style!).
