kilaueassparks-300x225As the year draws to a close I have started to see lots of music magazines and blogs post “Top 10 Songs/Albums Of The 2000′s) lists, and thought I’d turn the focus here over to surf and instrumental rock n’ roll. So in our comments section, please post your favorite songs and albums recorded and released in the 2000′s (no reissues please). I’ll pick a commenter at random in a few weeks and send out a free CD from the Double Crown catalog.

Barbwires – Searider. It’s been a good decade for surf but it’s in a league of it’s own

This one would be in my top 10 too. I’m going to give this a few weeks and tabulate the results at that point, hopefully leading to an article for the next Continental Magazine. It’s hard to stay out of it, but I really want to see what you all think are the top 10 releases and songs of the decade.

I vote for Revenge of the Suf Guitar by the Atlantics.
Martin Cilia did a fantastic job writing and playing this one.Thw Atlantic are a true surf band and have ridden the “Aussie Surf Waves” for decades. Rock on “The Atlantics”

The top album of the 200′s had got to be Martin Cilla’s ‘Revenge of the Surf Guitar’ 2007. A fantastic album menu of classical and modern surf instrumentals by a fantastic guitar player and composer.

Runner-up just has to be The Atlantics ‘The Next Generation’ 2001. A modern sounding yet traditional based collection by a surf band formed in 1963 and still going strong in 2009!

Album of the decade for me is Martin Cilia’s revenge of The Surf Guitar. Runner up is Rake & Surf Tones’ Surfers Drive Woodies and bronze goes to The Atlantics’ Point Zero.

  • Jim D said:

Although it’s not very traditional; I really enjoyed Spectrum of Infinite Scale by Man or Astroman?

I also really like The Nebulas s/t album.

For songs, I guess I would probably go with Von Schlieffen Plan by The Nebulas, Il Diavalo In Corpo by The Tormentos, and John Nineteen Forty-One by The Aqualads from that crazy Jesus Christ Surferstar comp(It just works so well as a surf song and it’s just so damn catchy).

I’ll probably completely disagree with my picks by tomorrow :D .

Martin Cillia’s “Revenge of the Surf Guitar” without a doubt. Clean and crack sharp playing with plenty of energy. Cillia has a gift ( shades of the Atlantics !) for translating the spirit of surfing, the booming Australian surf and the awe of facing an approaching deep ocean swell. The Atlantics ( with Martin) “Flight of the Surf Guitar” is also there.

The best of the 2000′s HAS to be Martin Cilia’s “Revenge Of The Surf Guitar” – see my email magazine “2Good4Words”, which voted it album of the year. Check out http://www.kimhumphreys.com

  • Wally Buczma said:

Revenge Of The Surf Guitar is the best surf guitar album i have heard in years, the production is great and Martin captures the sound and the feel of this music, i can tell he enjoys the music of the 60′s surf sounds it comes through in his guitar playing.
I think Martin’s CD Should be voted No.1 ( Great Sound Great Playing)

What! I would have thought that the Duo-Tones Surf music unplugged would have made the cut. I can understand the Mermen being left off, but the new “In God We Trust” 2009 would have made my list.

Best Album: The Vanduras “In the Dark”. Great surf album with a not-so-common sound.
