Just a week from today I will be escaping the chilly NW (there was frickin’ snow this morning on my way into work!) and flying into sunny Las Vegas for the 2009 Viva Las Vegas festival. As excited as I am about that, I’m equally, if not more, excited about the Wild Records Showcase gig on Wednesday at the Rio Hotel, featuring The Barbwires, Omar & The Stringpoppers, Santos and Luis & The Wildfires. Four great bands, yes, playing a major Las Vegas hotel, yes, yes, that’s all cool, but what’s the topper? They’re playing at the top of the hotel, 51st floor, at the Voodoo Lounge!!! How many surf & rockabilly gigs are you ever gonna see at the top of a hotel – it’s gonna be amazing! I will be taking a bunch of pictures, and will report back after the shows. Heck, if I can get my act together, and am sober enough, I’ll even try to do some twitter and remote blog posts. Despite this being a rockabilly fest, there are several surf bands on the bill that I will be checking out – The Barbwires, The Aquasonics, the Tequila Worms and Rod and the Tonemasters, as well as a Deke Dickerson mini Guitar Geek Festival.
